The Innovative Hysterectomy Procedure Using Surgical Robotics

Hysterectomy is the surgical procedure of removing a woman's uterus. This is often recommended by gynaecologists as a last resort cure to some of women's worst sexual health problems (e.g.: abnormal excessive bleeding in the uterus, fibroids, uterine cancer, cervical cancer, etc.) This process can be total, which means the uterus together with the cervix, fallopian tubes, pelvic lymph nodes, and ovaries will be removed. Otherwise, it would be partial, in which the cervix is retained.

Before robotics was introduced to the healthcare industry, the only available option for hysterectomy was an abdominal surgery. Usually, the incision would be made in the midsection of the patient's lower abdomen. Although surgeons find more dexterity with their hands, complications are higher using this traditional method. It can lead to much worse conditions, which can be extremely painful, strenuous, and even fatal for the patient. To add to it, recovery can take several months, which is too much hassle for the patient, not to mention the large scar that the surgery will leave behind. With robotics hysterectomy however, this procedure has improved into a completely new level.

Better optics and instruments used for laparoscopic surgery (which is a modern surgical technique that employs tools) are now available. Examples are the telescopic rod lens system that is connected to a camera and the fibre optic cable system that is connected to a halogen or xenon light to lighten up the area where the procedure will be performed. Everything that the camera will capture is then viewed on a screen. All of these are used to hysterectomy a quicker, less invasive, and more efficient and procedure.
